Impact of Workplace Conditions on Mental Health
Engaging in meaningful and well-structured work provides a sense of purpose, stability, and accomplishment, contributing positively to mental well-being. Conversely, adverse conditions such as discrimination, excessive workloads, low job control, and job insecurity can negatively impact mental health, leading to decreased job satisfaction and productivity.
In 2019, it was estimated that 15% of working-age adults globally experienced a mental disorder. Depression and anxiety are significant contributors to lost productivity, with an estimated 12 billion working days lost annually, costing the global economy approximately US$1 trillion per year.
Addressing these challenges requires creating supportive work environments that prioritize mental health, thereby enhancing both employee well-being and organizational productivity.
