Ayurveda’s Answer to Diabetes: Balancing Health and Productivity
This 13th November the World Diabetes Day, we spotlight a growing crisis with a unique lens-India’s diabetes epidemic and the untapped potential of Ayurveda in its management. With 54.4 million working-age Indians affected by diabetes, the disease's burden on productivity and economic growth is staggering. Ayurveda offers innovative and cost-effective strategies to address this challenge, targeting prevention, management, and holistic well-being.
Recent advances highlight Ayurveda’s ability to modulate key molecular pathways involved in diabetes, including insulin signalling, oxidative stress, and lipid metabolism. Holistic interventions focus on regulating cellular responses, optimizing metabolic efficiency, and mitigating inflammation. Ayurvedic methodologies, combining precise diagnostics, targeted herbal formulations, and lifestyle adjustments, align with modern insights into glucose metabolism and systemic health, offering a comprehensive strategy for managing the disease and its complications.
By integrating Ayurveda into modern public health strategies, workplaces, and policy frameworks, India can combat diabetes while fostering a healthier, more productive population. Together, let’s take a step towards reducing the economic and health impacts of diabetes-one Ayurvedic solution at a time.
Global Diabetes Cases Quadruple Since 1990
The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that global diabetes cases have surpassed 800 million, a four-fold increase since 1990. The epidemic is driven by obesity, unhealthy diets, and economic hardships, with low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) most affected. In 2022, 59% of adults with diabetes remained untreated, highlighting stark global inequalities. WHO has launched a Global Monitoring Framework on Diabetes to improve prevention, care, and treatment outcomes. The 2025 UN High-Level Meeting on NCDs presents a crucial opportunity to strengthen global efforts against this growing crisis.
